PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

TU Dublin Grangegorman Central Quad building is an interdisciplinary teaching building. With science, research and innovation-focused alongside general learning spaces, distributed learning commons, staff accommodation and building support. The East Quad building comprises product design through to manufacture, fine arts, TV, radio and journalism.

THE RAD SCOPE & BRIEF:

To design, coordinate and install two five-storey FE buildings covering all science specialisms. We were required to be the interpreter of the FE curriculum into the building and space design, in addition to designing the complex services distribution of their teaching and research laboratories among many other spaces. This included management of multi gasses, legacy equipment of a variety of shapes, sizes and service demands, different lab types to suit different specialisms, faraday lab, radioactive lab, biochemical management and lab etc

OUR SOLUTION:

We offered challenges on what a modern environment should aspire to, and how we could use technology to support the changing approach to their work. Each and every specialism of DUT was discussed with heads of department to clearly understand the functionality of each space.

HOW WE MADE A DIFFERENCE:

  • Designed in a complex BIM Stage 2 environment, including a fully scheduled CObie output for ongoing repair and future maintenance.
  • Brought our procurement expertise and knowledge of the furniture industry (both educational and commercial markets) to find the right solution for this project.
  • Designed from scratch, many of the key features in the buildings to deliver their exact solution requirements.
  • Created spaces using demountable walls in product design and fine arts where students would be the tenant of a zone for a term or Effectively this was an open floor plan, separated by movable walls.
  • Delivered on time during COVID restrictions and to budget.
  • Part of an award-winning project which received much praise from the industry.
