Lighthouse SEN
CLIENT: Cayman Island Government
TOTAL PROJECT VALUE: £20m (FF&E £800k)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The design and delivery of an extension to the current and only, SEN provision on the island to create a secondary school for PMLD, SLD, ASD and 6th form.
The emphasis was on delivering a soft and sympathetic environment for a range of needs.
THE RAD SCOPE & BRIEF:
To enable the delivery of a robust curriculum but through inspired design that would develop students abilities across a range of specialist requirements covering physical and mental difficulties. We also covered the audio visual elements creating sensory trails specific to different disabilities.
OUR SOLUTION:
We used a variety of tools including 3D renders, walkthroughs, 2D and 3D plans to produce concept ideas through to product sign-off and colour selection. The PMLD areas demanded a solution enabling students to be lifted and handled with dignity. including the hydrotherapy area. We provided specifications for all lifting equipment, all sensory and soft play needs, a rebound room and multi functional gymnasium.
HOW WE MADE A DIFFERENCE:
• Created a sensory solution specific to each SEN type.
• Enabled the use of colour through wall light washes that enabled the school to create different moods at the touch of a wireless button.
• Created a PMLD suite and swimming pool for severely limited physical abilities.
• The type of furniture in the open space required elements of practical work and so had to be reconfigurable and easily cleaned.
• Used elements of fitted furniture to define routes through the open spaces.
• Created life skills within the curriculum.
